Rosh HaShana literally means “Head of the Year” in Hebrew and it is the Jewish New Year, a time of prayer, self-reflection, and repentance. We review our actions during the past year, and we look for ways to improve ourselves, our communities, and our world in the year to come.

The holiday marks the beginning of a 10-day period, known as the Yamim Nora-im (“Days of Awe” or “High Holidays”), ushered in by Rosh HaShana and culminating with Yom Kippur (the “Day of Atonement”).

Rosh HaShana is widely observed by Jewish people throughout the world, often with prayer and reflection in a synagogue. There also are several holiday rituals observed at home. Rosh HaShana is celebrated on the first day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, and as with all Jewish holidays starts and ends with a delicious feast which – because of differences in the solar and lunar calendar – corresponds to September or October on the Gregorian or secular calendar.

Customs associated with the holiday include sounding the shofar, eating a round challah, and scrumptious honey cakes as well as tasting apples and honey to represent a sweet New Year.

*Remember to order your Rosh Hashana feast today at either our Englewood or Closter stores

It's spring time, and after the winter slog we sometimes need reminding how to get that spring back in our step:

1. Go for a “thank-you” walk

As you walk, focus on the things you feel most grateful for. Take a mental note of how you feel. The positive effects of exercise will flood your brain with happy neurotransmitters and endorphins. During your well- being walk...

2. Pop out and have a coffee

Compelling research from various institutions, including Harvard Medical School, finds that frequent low doses of caffeine (the amount in a quarter of a cup) are more effective at keeping your alert than a few larger doses. As you sip...

3. Stay still, relax

Simply sit and relax for ten minutes, enjoy the gentle hum of people chattering and soft music, just allow yourself to stare out of the window, let your mind drift wherever it wants to go. Sitting still may not sound like the best recipe for livening yourself up, but it’s often just what you need to refuel. At lunch time...

4. Egg-cellent energy source

As eggs do not cause surges in blood sugar and insulin, the protein in eggs is a steady and sustained source of energy. Eggs are rich in protein and nutrients including thiamin, riboflavin, folate, B12 and B6, the B vitamins that are essential for energy production. Eggs are packed with protein which feed your muscles making you stronger as well as satisfy your hunger for longer. On the side of your eggs...

5. Eat something crunchy

A salad infused with nuts, crisp lettuce, radish and other crunchy foods make your jaw work hard, which can wake up your facial muscles. Now your body and face are awake, finish your time out with...

6. Zest for life

Drink a big glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, it is a rich source of vitamin c, boosting your immune system, detoxifying the body and has anti-inflammatory properties, it helps your liver, supports your blood circulation and reduces high blood pressure... just knowing all these impressive health benefits are in one drink gives an energy boost!

Mission accomplished; Mind, body and soul revitalized!
